Efficacy and case studies for KEEP OFF®

tips.jpg (15336 bytes)Pets often develop objectionable habits such as sleeping on furniture and carpets, climbing curtains, sharpening their claws on furniture and soiling flower beds or patio furniture with urine or faeces. Pet owners find it difficult to break bad habits by the spoken word alone. KEEP OFF provides pet owners with a pleasant-to-use indoor and outdoor training aid to reinforce the spoken word.

cat.jpg (19927 bytes)KEEP OFF is also useful for deterring stray animals from soiling gardens. This is a more difficult job than training one’s own pet. Stray animals are attracted to areas where urine or faeces have been deposited. Faeces must be removed and urine flushed away with water. KEEP OFF masks the residual odours and breaks the stray animal’s habit of soiling a particular area.

KEEP OFF was developed by extensive laboratory screening tests and "user type" tests involving actual dog and cat owners in home situations. All testing was done through an independent laboratory. Samples of KEEP OFF gel and spray were given to technically trained co-operators to test on their pets. Each co-operator was asked to complete a questionnaire. This data is summarised below:

Dogs # 1: Neighbour’s dogs were allowed by their masters to urinate and defecate on the front lawn. Areas of the lawn were treated and observed over a 7 day interval.

Results – The dogs did not use the treated areas for 7 days. Retreatment was necessary after a heavy rain. Comment – "Very good product".

Dogs # 2: German Shepherd frequently knocked over a waste paper basket in his home. A sample was placed inside the basket and replaced every 2nd day when the basket was cleaned.

Results – The dog would not touch the basket when the product was present. Comment – "Worked well".

Dogs # 3: Golden Retriever had the habit of urinating and defecating in the rose garden. A sample was applied to the rose garden. Observation on the dog’s use of the treated area was made for 10 days.

Results – The animal stayed away from the treated area for 10 days. Weather conditions prevented further testing. Comment – "Product worked as claimed".

Dogs # 4: Golden Retriever urinates on his lawn at night and in the morning as soon as let out of the house. The area was treated with one cup of product and observations made on the dog’s subsequent use of the area for 7 days. Retreatment was made on day 7.

Results – The dog avoided the treated lawn and established a new habit of using the area behind the garage. Comment – "A successful change in habit was accomplished".

Dogs # 5: Dogs of all types used an evergreen bed in which to urinate and defecate. One cup of product was added to the bed. Observations were made for 12 days.

Results – The dogs stopped using the treated areas for 10 days. Comment – "Product should be sold on open market".

Cats # 1: A rose bed frequented by cats was treated with a band several inches wide. Observations on the cats use of the treated area was made until heavy rains.

Results – The product completely stopped the cats from using the treated area for 10 days. After the heavy rains the cats once again used the treated area. Comment – "Excellent product".

Cats # 2: Cat sits on furniture. Any furniture used and no special place preferred. All furniture except one chair was treated by placing on each a small piece of cloth which had been sprayed with test material.

Results – Very good through the 2nd day. On the morning of the 3rd day the cat was back on the untreated chair. This was the only piece of furniture the cat was observed on since the test was initiated. That evening the cat was observed lying on a piece of treated cloth. Comment – "Duration of effectiveness 36 hours".

Cats # 3: Cat climbs on back of chair and sleeps. Always uses same spot several times each day. A strip of cloth was sprayed with the test material and cloth was applied along top of chair back.

Results – Animal was not observed on back of chair for 24 hours. At 36 hours the cat was observed sitting on cloth strip but did not lie down. At 48 hours cat was observed sleeping on cloth. Comment – "It works".

Cats # 4: Cat climbs on all furniture in living room. One chair is favourite chair and is used more frequently than others. Cloth patches were treated and placed on furniture including favourite chair.

Results – Animal was not seen on any treated furniture for 24 hours. At 36 hours after initiation of test the cat was observed climbing onto chair and sitting for short period but keeping away from the treated cloth square. After 48 hours cat did sleep on chair but kept off the patch.

Cats # 5: Cat climbed on furniture and also went upstairs. Applied patches of treated cloth to half of furniture that cat used frequently. Also placed strip of treated cloth across stairway.

Results – Cat was not observed on chairs or furniture with patches but was seen on untreated chairs. The strip of cloth across the stairway did not keep the cat from going up steps but cat would jump the treated step. Comment – "A useful deterrent".
